How to Start Your Social Media Profiles as an Author

GUEST POST BY MARKETING GURU:

Kiersten Penaloza-Resch*

When diving into the world of social media as an author, your first and most crucial step is to pinpoint your target audience. Are you looking to captivate the imaginations of young adult readers with your latest fantasy novel? Or are you hoping to connect with parents and educators who might buy your book for a younger audience? This initial decision sets the stage for how you’ll craft your social media presence, so it’s worth taking the time to get it right.

Once you’ve identified your audience, it’s time to tailor your profiles to them. For instance, if your aim is to attract young adult readers, infuse your bio with playful language and eye-catching emojis. Keep it concise, memorable, and reflective of your unique voice. Your name is already listed on your profile, so focus on highlighting your role as “author,” “storyteller,” or something in between.

Beyond your bio, ensure your profile has a direct link to your author website, or a link tree that will direct someone to multiple sites. A professional, approachable profile picture is also key — choose an image that reflects who you are and resonates with your audience, whether it’s a candid photo with your book or a snapshot of you engaging in a favorite activity.

Now that the setup is over, it’s time to settle into your social media groove and decide on a posting schedule that works for you. I recommend posting at least 3 times per week with a specific theme that you follow for each post. For example, you could post about a writing inspiration, an activity you enjoy that circles back to your book, then book promotion. Each week, follow those three themes. Remember to sprinkle in image and sound trends that you see another artist doing!

Consistency, engagement, and authenticity are your allies in this journey.

When inspiration wanes, take a break to visit a coffee shop or go for a walk to reconnect with your creative self. You can also explore other creators for inspiration — just remember to infuse your unique voice and perspective into your posts.

If you still find yourself struggling with content ideas, remember that AI can be a game-changer. Tools like ChatGPT can help transform mundane phrases into engaging, whimsical captions that capture the essence of your work.

Finally, stay connected with other authors, publishers, and book influencers. Following trends and incorporating popular sounds and formats can help expand your reach and grow your social media presence. Engaging with the broader community will not only enhance your content, but it will also amplify your visibility and make it easier to share your story.
